The truth about the rumors, misinformation, and outright lies being spread about Gamers Unite!

by Alan Attebery - Apr 23, 2010 Star_s30,850 views

Over the past few days, a LOT of people have been accused of cheating by their Facebook friends simply for being a member of Gamers Unite! These bullies are acting on rumors, misinformation, and flat out lies. They threaten users with reporting them to Facebook and/or Zynga and demand that they leave Gamers Unite! or be de-freinded. Other well-meaning people, who think they are helping to right some wrong, start passing these rumors, misinformation, and lies on to others without checking the information for accuracy and/or using some common sense.

I have addressed many of the most common rumors, misinformation, and lies that are being spread about Gamers Unite!, our members, and the Snag Bar. Please feel free to use any or all of the information below to rebut someone you see propagating this incorrect information. You can also use the "Share" button at the top of the post to publish this directly to your Wall.

Make sure to also check out the following threads on the forum related to these threats:

1) Can my Facebook friends see that I'm a member of Gamers Unite!?

Yes. Although Gamers Unite! has its own Web address, we don't have our own member list. Instead, we use Facebook Connect to link our site to Facebook. While you can view all the content without joining Gamers Unite!, you cannot create a thread or reply to a post. When you use Facebook Connect, the Gamers Unite! application is installed on your Facebook profile. And like all applications, anyone you have friended on Facebook can see it.

Please note: THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN HOW ZYNGA OPERATES. When you go to the Zynga forums, you cannot make a post unless you give Zynga permission to access your Facebook profile. Like Gamers Unite!, Zynga does not maintain its own username and password database. So just like any Facebook friend can see you are a Gamers Unite! member, they can also see that you are a Zynga member.

2) I have installed the Snag Bar. Can Facebook tell it's installed? Can my Facebook friends tell?

Neither Facebook nor your Facebook friends can tell if you are using the Snag Bar, just like they can't tell if you are using one of the Firefox or Google Chrome add-ons, the Zynga Tool Bar, or any of the other bars out there that have been created to help people with their games.

That said, Facebook can detect irregularities if you use the Snag Bar, or any other tool bar, irresponsibly. The Snag Bar is an automated you. It physically clicks all the reward links on your News Feed. If you are also manually clicking links on other Facebook pages while the Snag Bar is clicking links on your News Feed, Facebook may detect this. If they do, they may temporarily suspend your ability to click links. This is why we recommend you do not run the Snag Bar while you are actively browsing through Facebook.

NOTE: This temporary suspension can happen even without using the Snag Bar. In fact, it has happened to two of our staff members prior to ever using the Snag Bar. Facebook doesn't like it when you have multiple site tabs open and are rapidly clicking links on those pages. So whether you choose to use the Snag Bar or not, be careful how quickly you are clicking links.

3) Is using the Snag Bar cheating?

That is a question each person must decide for themselves. The Gamers Unite! staff does not feel using the Snag Bar is cheating any more then using Zynga's Tool Bar, any of the Firefox or Google Chrome add-ons, or copying and pasting reward links in messages to certain friends instead of posting them on your Wall is cheating. It is simply a tool to help you find rewards to use on your farm.

What a lot of the bullies don't realize is that a large portion of the Snag Bar users only use the Snag Bar when they come back to their farm after being away for a period of time. They will use it to quickly comb through their FV posts to collect any rewards that haven't been exhausted yet. They will then turn it off and collect new rewards manually.

In addition, these bullies also don't realize that the Snag Bar doesn't snag constantly. Instead, it only activates once every 60 seconds. If a FV reward is posted 2 seconds after the Snag Bar did its last sweep, there is a good chance the reward will be gone by the time the next sweep occurs.

4) Can the Snag Bar snag items before they are posted to the News Feed?

In order for the Snag Bar to snag items that have not been posted to the News Feed yet, we would have to be able to see the future. And if we could see the future, we would have already won several lottery drawings and retired to a tropical island somewhere. We certainly wouldn't be here slaving over a hot computer.

The reason people think the Snag Bar can see the future is because they don't understand how the News Feed works. When someone posts something to their wall, it instantaneously posts to your News Feed. However, the Web page you are viewing your News Feed on only refreshes at set intervals (I think it's 60 seconds, but don't know for sure). As a result, you will almost always have items on your News Feed that you won't see on your Web page until the page automatically refreshes itself or you click the browser's refresh button. The Snag Bar, as with all automation tools, reads the real News Feed, not the displayed News Feed.

5) I am a Gamers Unite! member but have not installed the Snag Bar. Why am I being accused of cheating?

This is because your accuser does not understand what the Gamers Unite! application is all about.

The Gamers Unite! application is NOTHING more than Facebook Connect. As stated above, Facebook Connect is what allows people to log into our site without us having to maintain a separate member list. This is the same system that Zynga, the creators of FarmVille, use for their Forums. When you post over there, you click Facebook Connect, and the Zynga application is installed on your Profile. When you post over here, you click Facebook Connect, and the Gamers Unite! application is installed on your profile.

The Snag Bar is a computer program that installs on your computer. It uses the same Facebook Connect application to access your News Feed. Because of this, some people mistakenly believe, while others deliberately lie, that the Gamers Unite! application is solely for the Snag Bar and, as such, proves you are using the Snag Bar.

Since both the Gamers Unite! Forum and the Snag Bar use the EXACT SAME Gamers Unite! application, there is no way of telling who has actually installed the Snag Bar. While you have to be a Gamers Unite! member to use the Snag Bar, you don't have to be a Snag Bar user to be a Gamers Unite! member, a fact that seems to be completely lost on the people crying foul.

6) A Facebook friend threatened to report me to Facebook/Zynga and/or de-friend me if I didn't immediately drop my Gamers Unite! membership. What should I do?

First of all, don't let your so-called friend bully you into doing something you don't want to do. It's one thing for someone to have and state an opinion that the Snag Bar is unfair. But to threaten you into doing what they tell you to do is so pre-school.

Second, check your so-called friend's profile. How many of those bogus "Unlock your 30X30 FarmVille Expansion" and "Get unlimited fuel and coins" groups do they belong to? If they belong to some, ask them if they plan to report and de-friend themselves for cheating. True, they weren't successful since those groups were bogus, but they did try.

Third, don't let the "I'm going to report you" threat worry you. A bully who does report you will be exposing the threats s/he have made against you and others, which will cause more headaches for them than they could ever hope to cause for you. We have had no credible reports of anyone being investigated or banned as a result of someone crying "Snag Bar". And really, have you seen how many bogus "30 X 30 FarmVille Expansion" groups are out there? If they aren't doing anything about those groups, they really aren't going to care about us.

Finally, either wait and see if your so-called friend follows through and de-friends you or beat them to the punch and de-friend them yourself. You can always find more FarmVille neighbors. In fact, if you click on the "Add Me Requests" button at the top of the page, you will find hundreds of people just waiting for a good neighbor like you.

7) A friend told me that Facebook/Zynga was going to delete/ban everyone who is using the Snag Bar. Is this true?

No, it is not true. This is another attempt at trying to coerce you into doing what they want you to do. Even if Facebook or Zynga wanted to ban people using the Snag Bar (which they don't), they wouldn't know who to ban because they have no way of knowing who is using it. Just like they have no way of knowing who is using a Firefox or Google Chrome add-on or any of the other automated tools out there.

For more information about the various delete/ban threats being made, visit the Have you received a post saying that Facebook and/or Zynga is going to delete you? Read on! thread.

8) Someone said that blocking the Gamers Unite! application will keep the Snag Bar from seeing their FarmVille posts on the News Feed. Is this true?

Nope. The only thing the bully will accomplish by blocking the Gamers Unite! application is ensuring that they will never be able to post on this site. That's it. And, quite frankly, we're perfectly fine if they bar themselves from ever being able to post here. That's one less headache for us to deal with.

9) I was told that using the Snag Bar to collect a reward will prevent anyone else from collecting it. Is this true?

Using the Snag Bar to collect items is no different than manually collecting items. It's just faster. It will not cause the reward item to shut down prematurely.

All FarmVille rewards have a set number of items available for people to collect. Most items, like the Collection rewards, Chicken Eggs, and lonely pets, are set for 3 - 5 items. Once that number is hit, and only once that number is hit, will people no longer be able to snag that item. About the only reward that is set at 1 item only are the Spring Basket Redeemables (Mystery Egg, Ewe, Gnome, Gilded Egg, Fountain, and Windmill). Once it's been snagged, that's it. There are no more.

10) I was told the Snag Bar is nothing more than a virus. Why would you do this?

We did no such thing and would NEVER do such a thing. The Snag Bar is a 100% legitimate program that contains NO malicious coding. We are so anti-virus, we keep 12 cases of Penicillin on hand at all times. Which is really problematic for me since I'm allergic to that stuff.

When you install the Snag Bar in Firefox, the CoolChaser Toolbar add-on is the only item added to your computer (go to Tools --> Add-ons to see it). When you install the Snag Bar in Internet Explorer, the CoolChaser Toolbar is installed on your computer (go to Control Panel --> Programs and Features to see it). The program then installs two add-ons to Internet Explorer: CoolChaser Toolbar and Freecause Toolbar BHO (go to Tools --> Manage Add-Ons --> Toolbars and Extensions (IE8) / Enable or Disable Add-ons (IE7) to see it). Nothing else is installed.

11) I never signed up for Gamers Unite!, yet I'm showing up as being a member. My friend said it's because you illegally added me to your member list.

We did no such thing. Facebook's own programming prevents such a scenario from happening. The ONLY way to become a Gamers Unite! member is to click the Facebook Connect icon while browsing this site. This will install the Gamers Unite! application to your Facebook Profile. This is no different than clicking the Facebook Connect icon on YouTube, Twitter, Zynga, or any other site that offers to link you up to your Facebook Profile.

If you have accidentally signed up as a Gamers Unite! member, or no longer want to be a member here, you will need to delete our application from your Profile. To do so, go to any Facebook page, and: 1) click on Accounts --> Privacy Settings; 2) Under Applications and Websites, click the “Edit Your Settings” link; 3) In the Applications You Use section, click the “Edit Settings” button; 4) Find the Gamers Unite! listing and click the “x” on the right side of the line.
