Is there some secret to acquiring more gold bricks & alchemist powders?

I am struggling with getting enough gold bricks and alchemist's powders to build my royal buildings. I have one neighbor that has a 51,000 castle count (most of my high achieving neighbors are between the 7,000 & 9,000 mark). How is this possible? It has taken me forever just to get my kingdom to 5400 castle level. Any secrets? I cant find them...those links offering free gold links don't actually seem to work.
