why do castles disappear?

Someone else posted this question, but I cannot find the thread/post anymore. I noticed that my "hard-earned" castlepoints were decreased by 15 each on two occasions. What in the world did I do or happened? Does anybody know? I didn't collect taxes in a while, but that shouldn't matter, methinks. Thanks.
